Laws Concerning Youth in Austria

In Austria the youth policy and decision making is different than in many European Union countries. The Bundesrat and Nationalrat (Parliament) are responsible together for the decision making. For the Bundesrat, the 9 Bundesländern (States of Austria) delegate 1 representative each. For this decision making process comes the European Union. There are many European-level laws which were adopted by the Austrian gov-ernment, that are not part of the European legislative process. The Austrian laws mostly focus on the protection of children and youth.

One of the most important youth empowerment policies is the 2009 Youth Strategy which defines a youth strategy for the timeframe 2010-2018. In this list, we gathered the laws which are in practice on the federal level, because the Bundesländern have the sovereignty to implement laws in their own state with modifications; such laws are called landesrecht.

All in all, the youth policy in Austria is not strongly centralized. The Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth are making evaluations and recommendations annually for the Bundesrat and Nationalrat to further improve the Austrian youth model.
